Get To Know The Collie

Although a large, active dog, the Collie is both elegant and graceful, appearing to float over the ground as it runs. Loyal and affectionate, the breed is naturally responsive to humans. Marked characteristics include the beautiful coat of the rough variety and the breed's lean wedge-shaped head. The coat can be rough or smooth and the four accepted colors are sable and white, tri-color, blue merle and white. The best-known Collie is, of course, the famous Lassie.

Facts About The Chihuahua - Did You Know?

  • The Chihuahua comes in two varieties: long and smooth coat.
  • The Toltecs, who existed in what is now Mexico as early as the 9th century AD, possessed a breed of dog called the Techichi. The breed was small, but not tiny, and heavy-boned. This breed, regarded as indigenous to Central America, is the progenitor of the Chihuahua that exists today.
  • The breed derives its name from the Mexican State of Chihuahua, where the earliest specimens of the breed were found.
  • The Chihuahua is clannish, preferring companions of his own breed.
  • Pictures of dogs resembling the modern Chihuahua appear in ancient paintings in Mexico.
  • It is assumed that the small size of the modern Chihuahua results from a cross of the Techichi with the small hairless dog brought from Asia to Alaska over the land bridge that is now the Bering Strait.

Facts About The Cavalier - Did You Know??

  • The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is AKC's 140th breed.
  • The Cavalier became fully recognized by the AKC in January 1996.
  • The Cavalier was featured on the hit HBO series, "Sex and the City", as Charlotte York's dog.
  • The Cavalier was a favorite of King Charles I of Britain (the breed's namesake).
  • When the house of Stuart fell, it became a political liability to be associated with the dogs of King Charles (the Tudors favored the Pug), and the Cavalier breed became extremely rare.
  • Queen Victoria brought back the breed, but the Cavalier had changed radically from its original form; the original version of the breed had all but disappeared.
  • In 1928, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club was founded in England in attempts to support a revival of the "Old Type", and since then, the dog has grown to become one of the most popular breeds in Great Britain.

Facts About The Bull Terrier - Did You Know??

  • Bulldog-terrier crosses, of various sizes and colors, became popular as sporting dogs in the early 1800s. Around 1860, in response to the growing interest in dog shows and the demand for pet and prize dogs, James Hinks - a Birmingham dog dealer - developed a more refined version of these crosses, distinguished by its all white coat. These dogs soon established themselves as a new breed - the Bull Terrier. In Hinks' day they were often referred to as White Cavaliers.
  • In developing the Bull Terrier early records indicate that Hinks employed existing Bulldog-terrier crosses, his own white Bulldog Madman and the now extinct White English Terrier. Also it is believed he added Dalmatian and possibly Greyhound to the mix.
  • In the early 1900's Bull Terriers were back crossed with brindle Staffordshires to produce a colored variety. So today they come in two varieties, the White and the Colored. The modern white Bull Terrier often sports a colored patch on its head.
  • Their coat is short and glossy and requires very little grooming.
  • The Bull Terrier loves games with a ball or other toys and all sorts of outdoor activities.
  • Bull Terriers do not bark unless there is a good reason. When a Bull Terrier is barking, pay attention.

Facts About The Briard - Did You Know??

  • The Briard is a very old breed of French working dog.
  • The Briard is depicted in French tapestries as early as the 8th century.
  • In early times, Briards were used to defend their charges against wolves and poachers, but they eventually became more peaceful herding dogs.
  • History credits both the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson with bringing specimens of the Briard to the Americas.
  • Legend has it that Chien Berger de Brie - the early name of the breed - is actually a misnomer of Chien d'Aubry, from a 14th century recounting of Aubry de Montdidier as having erected a cathedral in memory of his valiant dog - supposedly a Briard -who saved his son's life.
  • In 1909, a French society called Les Amis du Briard (Friends of the Briard) was founded which eventually drew up a precise standard in 1925.
  • Thomas Jefferson became interested in Briards while serving as minister to France. He purchased a pregnant female named "Buzzy" and started his breeding program. Lafayette also sent Jefferson purebred dogs - two Briards to help protect his sheep.

Facts About The Boston Terrier - Did You Know?

  • The Boston Terrier is a native American breed.
  • The Boston Terrier is the result of a cross between an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier, later considerably inbred.
  • In the year 1889, fanciers formed the American Bull Terrier Club (the former name of Boston Terriers), but upon meeting opposition from both Bulldog and Bull Terrier fanciers, changed the name in 1891.
  • The AKC admitted the Boston Terrier in 1893.
  • Much of the progress in the Boston Terrier breeding program has been made in the 20th century; it is a relatively new breed.
  • The original sire and dam of the Boston Terrier breed (the Bulldog and English Terrier that were bred) were named "Judge" and "Gyp".

Australian Shepard Facts - Did You Know??

  • The Australian Shepherd is AKC's 135th breed.
  • The Aussie as we know it today developed in the US.
  • The Aussie probably originated in the Basque region of the Pyrenees Mountains, but it was dubbed the Australian Shepherd because of its association with Basque shepherds who arrived in the United States from Australia in the 1800's.
  • Previous names of the Aussie include Spanish Shepherd, Pastor Dog, Bob-Tail, Blue Heeler, New Mexican Shepherd, and California Shepherd.
  • The Aussie's popularity boomed with Western culture and horse-riding after WWII and was often featured in rodeos, horse shows, movies, and TV.
  • The Aussie is a favorite of ranchers, who use the breed for its inherent trainability and herding ability. It is a loose- to medium-eyed dog ("eye" being a general term referring to the way a dog controls stock via gaze).
  • The Australian Shepherd is not registered in Australia as a native breed, although it has been registered by other registries since the 1950's.

The Museum Is History is drawn from the Museum’s acclaimed holdings of modern and contemporary art as well as from local collections. The works on view in The Museum Is Historyroughly span the years 1950 to 1990. Beginning with gestural abstraction, the exhibition turns to those artists who wanted to rethink the role of art-making materials and tools and to those who embraced a reductive vocabulary with elegant symmetry. The display concludes with a number of the artists from the 1980s who delved even further into an exploration of the human condition by combining minimal traditions with emotive content.

Get to Know The Alaskan Malamute

The largest and oldest of the Arctic sled dogs, the Alaskan Malamute possesses great strength and endurance. He is not designed to race, but rather to carry large loads over long distances. Today, many Malamutes are family pets, but are highly athletic and still capable of enjoying sledding, weight-pulling, back-packing, jogging and swimming with their owners. The Malamute coat is thick and coarse, with a plumed tail carried over the back. The coat usually ranges in color from light gray to black or from sable to red. Face markings, including a cap on the head and a bar/mask on the face are often distinguishing features.

Get to Know The Afghan Hound

Referred to as an aristocrat, the Afghan Hound's appearance is one of dignity and aloofness. Well covered with thick, silky hair, very fine in texture, the Afghan hound's coat is a sort found among animals native to high altitudes. They can come in all colors, and while the breed is an excellent hound (hunting by sight) its popularity here has been generated by the breeds' spectacular qualities as a show dog.
